What is Becoming Together?

Becoming Together, curated by 1 to 1 Gallery, gathers a cross-section of contemporary New Orleans artists whose practices engage perception, materiality, and the mutable character of place.

Shaped by the city’s distinctive relationship to light, shadow, space, and time, the exhibition considers how these elemental conditions inform visual experience and collective identity. The works move between documentation and abstraction, surface and structure. They trace the shifting atmospheres of New Orleans, its density and openness, its cycles of decay and renewal, reflecting on how environments imprint themselves on the body and imagination.

Through painting and sculpture, the participating artists reveal the city not as fixed geography but as a continuous process of becoming: layered, improvisational, and alive to contradiction. Becoming Together situates these dialogues within a broader inquiry into how artists record, distort, and reconstruct reality, offering a lens through which perception emerges as personal and communal, fleeting and enduring.

Spread across two venues in the downtown arts district, the show will be on view to the public March 21-25, 12pm-5pm.

Studio 633

Located at 633 Carondelet Street in downtown New Orleans, Studio 633 is a luminous second-floor creative loft that serves as a blank canvas for artistic exchange and gathering. Flooded with natural light and defined by high ceilings, clean architectural lines, and subtle traces of the building’s historic character, the space moves fluidly between gallery, salon, and performance environment. Suspended just above the rhythm of the Central Business District, Studio 633 offers an atmosphere that is both refined and quietly experimental, an intimate urban sanctuary where art, conversation, and community converge.

Salon 740

Located at 740 Carondelet Street, Salon 740 is a converted warehouse reimagined as the welcoming threshold to Becoming Together. Defined by sweeping street-facing windows that invite passersby inside from rhythm of downtown, the space functions as exhibition entry point and gathering salon. Once industrial in character, it serves as a living foyer where guests arrive, beginning their journey through the festival, surrounded by artwork introducing the spirit of the experience. Open and grounded in texture of the city, Salon 740 marks the moment where street life gives way to immersion.
